Why is this Important
This project tackles imposter syndrome and stereotype threat in the black community. According to Jayanti Owens and Douglas Massey's research on "Stereotype Threat and College Academic Performance," minority students underperform due to the pressures created by negative stereotypes (2013). When a black student underperforms, it is rarely due to a lack of effort. Many systemic and institutional barriers prohibit black students from moving forward in academia. Not only is there a lack of opportunity, but these stereotypes are often internalized, leading to a loss of moral and repeated cycles of generational poverty. BMIA is here to rework this narrative by showing rather than telling black folks that they can succeed, and there is room for them.
